Let the number of boys = x and number of girls = y so that required ratio = x : y

    According to question , we have x – 5 = 2y —(1) and x = y +35 …......(2) solving (1) and (2) for x and y , we get x = 75 and y = 40 So the required ratio = 75 : 40 = 15 : 8.

second Question: Let the present age of Sally = x years Age of Sally before 16 years = ( x -16 ) yrs Age of Sally after 12 years = ( x + 12 ) yrs According to question , we have

    x – 16 = x / 3 - (1) and x + 12 = 3x / 2 -—(2) On solving (1) and (2) for x , we get x = 24 Hence the present age of Sally = 24 years
